The Sun, the Moon and the eight major planets of the Universe form the basis for all astrology-related studies and analysis. The energies of these planets affect our lives in many different ways. In ancient times only the seven planets-namely Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn were used for astrology purposes. Only in the last few centuries man has discovered the three outer planets of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto and introduced them into his astrological studies.

Jupiter

This is the biggest of all the planets of the solar system. Its radius is nearly 44,360 miles. The redius of Jupiter is nearly 11 times longer than that of the Earth. When it is nearer to the Earth it is seen brighter than any other fixed star but is less brighter than Venus. Jupiter is said to be surrounded by a dense atmosphere of methane and ammonia gases.

Mars

The diameter of Mars is roughly 4200 miles and it is smaller to earth. The temperature of the planet is said to be very low. It is being doubted whether existence of human life is possible there .When viewed under a telescope, the Northern hemisphere appears as brown patches and the Southern parts as bluish-grey patches.

Mercury

Mercury is the nearest planet to the Sun and its mean distance is about 36 million miles. It is the smallest planet in the Solar System with a diameter of about 3000 miles. It is 1.5 times bigger than the Moon. It is also the swiftest moving planet. It moves from 18 deg to 28 deg to maintain its angular distance from the Sun.

Moon

The Moon is the nearest celestial neighbor to the earth. The distance from the Earth to the Moon is roughly about 240, 000 miles. The radius of Moon is about 1080 miles. The orbit of the Moon around the earth is not circular but elliptical. Moon moves round the Earth from the West to the East with reference to the fixed stars by 13.2 deg.

Neptune

Neptune takes about 14 years to travel through one sign of the zodiac and 84 years to complete half a cycle around the zodiac. Neptune takes about 164 years to complete its cycle through all twelve signs. The energy of Neptune is very slow and nebulous. It can shroud us in mystery, heighten our spiritual awareness or drive us to the depths of despair. The energy of Neptune is very difficult to understand or grasp unlike the other planets. As it is far away from the earth, its energy takes time to reach the earth or it gets dissipated on the way according to Astrologers.

Pluto

Pluto is a tiny planet which has an erratic orbit. It takes 10 to 12 years to complete one cycle of the zodiac. Sometimes it moves very slowly taking over 30 years to complete one sign. Pluto takes approximately 248 years to make one cycle through all twelve signs. The period Pluto spends in each sign can vary from twelve years to thirty two years due to the eccentricity of its orbit. Though it is smaller in size, its energy is enormous. Pluto governs complete transformations, death, the underworld, volcanoes and deep spiritual matters.

Saturn

Saturn is next to Jupiter in size. Its chemical composition is similar to that of Jupiter with a mixture of methane and ammonia gases. The planet is surrounded by three circular concentric rings. The diameter of the entire system is 1,71,000 miles. The rings will be seen in their maximum widths when Saturn is at the point in the constellations of Taurus and Gemini.

Sun
