German Boy Names

Germanic names spread with the Germanic tribes from their original homes in northern Europe. During the first millennia a great deal of the continent came under Germanic rule and thus their names were imported into southern regions such as Spain and Italy. Germanic names such as Charles, Louis, Henry, Frederick and Matilda were borne by the royalty of Francia and Germania. The Angles, Saxons, and Jutes were the first to bring Germanic names to England. Some Anglo-Saxon (Old English) names still used today are Edward, Alfred and Edith. After the Norman French conquered England in 1066, many continental Germanic names such as William, Roger and Richard replaced the Old English ones.
