At the turn of the millennium, Portugal’s Luis Filipe Madeira Caeiro Figo was about to make waves, huge waves. As one of the top 3 players in the world by virtue of having scored 30 goals in 172 games, Figo was transferred from FC Barcelona to Real Madrid for a then record $56 million. To measure the impact of such a change of allegiance, this was the equivalent of the league superstar being traded from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees; the Montreal Canadiens to the Toronto Maple Leafs; the Dallas Cowboys to the Washington Redskins or the Los Angeles Lakers to the Boston Celtics.

Conflict between Vice-President and Coach

In the military, mutiny can lead to a discharge. In sports, having a coach lobby for the General Manager position to the team President can lead to dismissal. Butch Carter did this as coach of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Toronto Raptors when he tried to usurp GM Glen Grunwald's position. He was subsequently fired and Grunwald went on to build upon Carter's foundation. The stigma that was attached to Carter did not leave.

Enemy or Friend

While most will remember their old team, fans and teammates with fondness, their goals become consistent with those of their new team. If you want to win the Championship, you may have an old enemy cast as an ally.

Future Boss

What is key to remember with your professors and classmates is that each may resurface as a boss. Some teachers are personable while others are tough. Bosses will be the same. Some instill fear while others show you compassion. For better or worse, you should view each one like a rite of passage, a step in your development.
