How do I take care of orchids? After orchids are done blooming, how do you prune them back?Orchids are some of the most popular and rewarding houseplants! There are many, many kinds, each with different requirements, but here are some general care tips for orchids: They like daytime temperatures of about 70F in the summer, 60F in the winter and a drop of ten degrees at night. How do regular house lights and fluorescent lights differ in their effect on plants?Regular lights (incandescent bulbs) give off a light rich in red—but plants need both red and blue rays to grow well. For long-term light use, then, you need to use either fluorescent or high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting. If you use fluorescents, usually using one "cool" bulb and one "warm" bulb works well, although in some cases certain plants will do better under special "full-spectrum" tubes. |

How much sunlight should my plant be getting? For more information on individual plants in your area, you may want to contact your Agricultural Extension Agent. Sometimes they have Master Gardeners on hand who can answer your questions. If not, you may want to contact a nursery or even your local library. If you just purchased the plant, often the plant tags will tell you how much sunlight the plant should receive. |

I have little white furry insects all over my plant leaves and I would like to know how to get rid oYour plant could be infested with whiteflies (if they fly away when you touch the leaf) or mealybugs (if they don't move). Or it could be aphids. If the insects appear to be mealybugs—white, cottony-looking creatures that congregate in the area where the leaf meets the stem—try dabbing them with rubbing alcohol. Keep a very close eye on your other houseplants, as all these pests spread easily. At the first sign of the insects, begin spraying. |

I´m moving to a new house. What is the safest way to move my houseplants? If you are moving with a commercial truck (or plane), it may be too cold to transport them safely during the winter months. You might be able to have them crated in insulated packaging and then sent along with your household goods by a household moving company or possibly a freight forwarder; some courier companies will arrange very special transit including meeting a package at an airport and ensuring it is handled correctly or even accompanying a shipment, but this is pretty expensive. |

I´ve had an African Violet for a couple of years and it suddenly stopped blooming. What can I do toIf your plant hasn't bloomed for over a year, it may be just resting, or it may not be getting all of the required elements. Some expert gardeners are able to get African violets to bloom 10 months of the year. This is because the plants are given perfect growing conditions. More often, though, African violets will bloom for a few weeks, then rest for several weeks, and then bloom again. Here are some pointers on care: |
