Trouble Shooting
After I dig up my dahlias and let them dry, how do I separate them? Where do I make the cut, and doSometimes it's easier to see where to divide if you wait until spring and divide just prior to planting. Dahlia tubers form a sort of wagon wheel shape with the main stem protruding out of the middle. Each section is capable of producing a new plant, providing it has an "eye." You'll see the bud begin to swell in the spring, and will be able to tell where to cut based upon the position of the eye. Look for it near the top of the tuber near the stem. Cut above the eye. Each tuber with an "eye" can be cut away from the main stem. |

Can hostas be divided after they have already started to grow in the spring, and if not, when can thHostas can be divided almost anytime, but very early spring before they have started to grow and then again in the fall are preferred. The reasoning is to allow the roots time to reestablish before the hot weather sets in. Make sure to water them well the day before you dig them and water them in well afterwards. Keep the soil moist but not soggy until they are reestablished. |

Dealing with DroughtWhen drought conditions exist, a lawn slows its growth, wilts, then turns straw-colored and becomes dormant. Most cool-season, and some warm-season lawns, will recover again when the drought ends, but they look dead until then. This is a natural reaction by the grass. |

Gray Snow MoldGray snow mold (Fusarium Patch Typhula ishikariensis) is strictly a cold weather disease that affects cool-season grasses (Bluegrass, Fescues, Ryegrass, Zoysiagrass and Bentgrass). It is triggered by cold temperatures and plentiful moisture and thrives where there is cover, such as leaves, long grass or lawn debris. Often though, it is caused from a heavy blanket of melting snow. Extensive injury is likely to follow periods when snow has laid in place for several months. |

How can I keep raccoons out of my yard?Raccoons feed on ripening fruit at night. Raccoons are a nuisance mainly in rural and suburban areas. They generally live near a source of natural water, such as a stream, marsh or pond. Raccoons are very dextrous and inquisitive animals. They frequently turn over garbage cans in their search for food. They sometimes take up residence in attics, basements, barns or similar locations. Although these animals carry fleas and ticks, they are not considered a serious health threat. Raccoons can be dangerous if cornered. They can be carriers of rabies, so avoid all animals exhibiting odd behavior. |

How can I save my poinsettias from Christmas and plant them outdoors? In the most mild of climates, it is possible to grow poinsettias in the ground. But if the temperatures dip below 40F, the plants will be damaged. If snow or freezing temperatures are normal in your garden, don't plant them outdoors, but take them outdoors in the summer. Here's one way to keep poinsettias from one year to the next, starting from shortly after the holidays. |
