Trouble Shooting
Plan for the last frostThe initiation of your outdoor garden activity is always dependent on the frost date. Gardeners naturally become more religious about watching the calendar in February, as they eagerly wait for the last frost to come and go for another season. |

Something is bothering my hosta plants. The leaves look like they have holes in them and some even lThe two most common reasons for holes in hosta leaves early in the season are slug damage and hail damage. Slugs will leave a silvery slime trail and can be controlled by handpicking at night when they are active, traps or baits (read and follow the label instructions carefully). Hail damage (or other physical damage such as that caused by trampling) may occur much earlier in the season and only become apparent when the leaves have fully unfurled and begun to grow. |

We had an unexpected freeze. I have many plants and large gardens. What can I do to save them?Unfortunately, once the damage is done there isn't much you can do. However, it is possible that although the tops are badly damaged, the roots may be fine since they were insulated by the soil. |

We´re experiencing a drought. What can I do for my grass besides watering? If the grass is still growing, mow higher to encourage the roots to go deeper. The time between waterings needs to be stretched to the maximum. Make sure to water efficiently, wasting no water to runoff, and water thoroughly. During severe water shortages, let the lawn go brown. Many lawns simply go dormant during times of low rainfall. A healthy lawn of a perennial grass, though completely brown, can survive months of no water and recover quickly once rains return. |

What can I do to keep the rabbits from eating my plants? There are a number of animal repellent sprays that would help deter rabbits from eating the flowers, and some gardeners swear by fox urine. Fencing can be effective. |

What care and feeding should I give my citrus trees to maximize fruit production?Citrus trees thrive on constant moisture, so apply enough water slowly and deeply to thoroughly soak the root mass. How often to water depends on your soil characteristics, rainfall and weather. Use a soil probe to help determine how often to apply water (such as a pointed stick or metal rod), and poke it into the soil. It will move easily through moist soil and stop at dry soil. As trees mature, be sure to water out to their canopy or drip line, where new roots are growing. To keep water from evaporating too quickly, mulch over the root area. This will also help suppress weeds. |

What is causing this yellow spot in my lawn?It is virtually impossible to determine the cause of the problem you are experiencing with your lawn without being able to see it firsthand. There are a number of possible causes for a lawn to yellow and look unhealthy: fungus/disease, the need for a fertilizer, lack of watering or insect damage. |

What is the best method for preserving cut flowers in a vase? I´ve heard of preserving cut flowersThe secret to keeping cut flowers from wilting is to give them a constant supply of water. The first rule is to cut in the early morning, and take only the freshest, just barely opened flowers. If you can place cut flowers into a container of water immediately after cutting, you will keep the vascular system within the stem working in an upward direction. When you take the stems out of water, air can clog the cells and can stop the capillary action. Place the stems into a container filled with a mixture of 1 teaspoon bleach and 1 tablespoon of sugar stirred into 1 gallon of water. The acid slows bacterial growth and the sugar provides nutrients. Change the solution every three days to help prolong the blooming time. You can use a soft drink, as it contains both acid and sugar. |
