2. Questions to ask before you build your Home bar

Before you get started on your home bar you should take a few minutes to think about the look and layout you want to have. If you take the time in the beginning to make a solid plan for your home bar you will be happier with the results. We have compiled a list of questions (don't be alarmed by the number - they are painless) that you should ask yourself before you get started. There is no right or wrong answer, just questions to get you in the proper mind frame to build your perfect home bar.

3. Layout and Design of your Home Bar

This is where your Home Bar starts to take shape, going through this stage of planning will give you insight into the size of your bar, what type of bar furniture and beer refrigeration you will need as well as how long this project will take. One good way to get ideas is to visit some local taverns and take a close (sober) look at what they have. What elements do you like? Adding a big glass mirror on the back bar? Where will the liquor bottles be placed? What types of bar stools? Look at the bar structure... how was it made, what's it made out of? Visit a bunch of places and make notes of the things you like. Bringing along a digital camera can always help. You may find yourself altering the initial idea of your home bar significantly based on the space you have available to you, below are a few things for you to consider.

4. Draft Beer and Wine Refrigeration for your Home Bar

Refrigeration is one of the most important components of your Home Bar. There are many types of bar refrigeration: Wine Refrigerators, Draft Beer Refrigerators, Kegerators, Beverage Centers, and Ice Makers. The types of refrigeration you incorporate sinto your bar will be based on the amount of room you have and the types of beverages you enjoy. You can also use a single piece of refrigeration like a back bar refrigerator to handle beer, wine, and soda. You must also consider if you are going to build your units into the counter or under the bar. If you choose to do so you need to make sure the compressor vents to the front, or that the unit is labeled as being able to be built in. If not, the hot air given off by the compressor has nowhere to vent to and ends up burning out the compressor motor. Once this happens the compressor is shot, and for all intent and purpose so is your refrigerator.

5. Building Your Home Bar

Let's assume you have decided not to buy a ready to assemble (RTA) home bar but install a custom home bar. You need to determine if you are going to build it yourself or if you are going to hire a contractor to do it. This will depend on the amount of free time you have vs. the amount money you have to spend. The size of the project and you time frame will also factor into who builds your home bar.

6. Bar Arm Rests And Bar Foot Rails

The final touches for your basement or rec-room bar will be Arm Rests and Foot Rails. Your bar will look okay with out the foot rails but it will look odd and be uncomfortable to sit at with out some sort of handrail or armrest. There are two different styles of arm rests, metal arm rests and wood arm rests. Once you have figured out your arm rests you should look into Foot Rails. Why install foot rails? Standing with one foot slightly raised and resting on something is considerable more comfortable while leaning against a bar. That is why most bars and pubs have them; if the patrons are more comfortable they will stay longer and spend more money.

7. Bar Stools and Seating for your Home Bar

Once you have your Home Bar constructed you will need a place for people to sit. Time for some Bar Stools. There are many varieties and Sizes of Bar Stools and they range in cost for very reasonable to quite expensive. You will first need to determine if you want Wood Bar Stools or Metal Barstools. If your bar is the standard 42" you will most likely want 30" bar stools.

8. Stocking your Home Bar

When your home bar is finally finished you will need to stock it so you can pour drinks and entertain. You will need to buy some bar supplies and bar accessories. You can break these down into three basic groups: alcohol, mixers, and bar accessories. What you finally decide to have behind the bar will depend on what drinks you serve the most of, but below are basics.

Assembly Instructions: Brass Rail

I recommend completely assembling the rail with the screws provided in the kit and tighten all the screws enough so they make visible marks on the brass rail sections. Then, disassemble the rail and drill 3/16"
