American BulldogThe self-assured American bulldog is alert, outgoing, and friendly with family members and others accepted by the family, but is wary of strangers and may be aggressive toward other dogs. It gets along with children and other animals, including cats, if socialized with them at an early age. Obedience training should also begin early, as American bulldogs can be very stubborn. |

Bernese Mountain DogThe Bernese mountain dog is sweet, gentle, and family-oriented. It does well in obedience training. It is friendly to people it knows--including children--and other animals, but may be aloof with strangers. The Bernese is a good watchdog. |

BoxerThe well-bred boxer is energetic, gentle, and fun loving with adults and children, although it is wary of strangers. Boxers generally get along with other dogs, but some females may be aggressive and some males inclined to fight for dominance. Early obedience training is therefore very important. With a consistent, determined owner, the boxer does well in obedience classes. |

BullmastiffBullmastiffs are fearless and confident, yet docile. They are reliable, intelligent, and have a natural instinct to guard their families. Early obedience training is essential for these powerful, active, and stubborn dogs. Games like tug-of-war and wrestling are not recommended. If socialized, bullmastiffs accept strangers and are affectionate and patient with children and other animals in their family. They will not, however, tolerate trespassers. Some are heavy droolers. |

Doberman PinscherDobermans are highly energetic, sensitive dogs that respond well to love and praise but not to heavy-handed discipline. Well-socialized Dobermans get along with children and other animals if raised with them and if treated with respect, but they can be aggressive with other dogs. |

Dogue de BordeauxThe Dogue de Bordeaux boasts a very deep, intimidating bark. It guards its property with vigilance and great courage but usually without aggression. This breed becomes very attached to its owner and is affectionate with children but can be aggressive with unfamiliar dogs. |

English BulldogBulldogs are calm and gentle dogs that get along with everyone. They are patient and loving with children, although they won't frolic with them for hours, and usually get along with other dogs and with cats. |
